“Care instructions”…My personal beanies are machine washed, but I don’t recommend this for everyone!
Unless they own one of these machines one is an Asko from Sweden, the other Miele from Germany, and I also have a Hoover that was made in Europe. These are all front loaders, with a glass door in the wool cycle, you can see through the glass door that there is minimal movement, they just rock gently for a couple of minutes, then pause for a few minutes, and then repeat this over and over again and when they spin it is 400 rpm, if you’re able to affirm your machine follows this pattern, it’s probably okay, otherwise hand washing is recommended.
These machines just rock backwards and forwards gently then stop for a few minutes which is the secret for woolens and silk “minimum movement”. Definitely not in a laundromat though! A proper wool detergent has the right pH for the natural fibre, and Softly is the brand I use.,,In the UK,I used brand called Woolite
When washed …hold the hat at the top with one hand, and the bottom with the other hand and gently stretch turning it as you do, this refreshes the rib, which gives it its natural shape, there is nothing added to this hat. Alpacas natural springiness, is all it needs.
In Australia we also use “comfort “conditioner in the final rinse cycle,(Available in Woolies and Coles)It seems to have waxes, which other conditioners don’t,…nice mild perfume In the one for babies, This has the added benefit of discouraging moths as is it stays in the hat after the wash,
Washing also refreshes the natural shape of the hat….
See “Alchemy for cleaning vintage clothing”,also in the menu for more insights on how to prevent insect damage
